SUMMARY:Bach300: NOW 1726
DESCRIPTION:O Most-Anticipated Celebration!  In 1726\, the 41-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach was enjoying the most favourable conditions for the composition and performance of first-class vocal works.  He was in the midst of his 3rd cycle of church cantatas in Leipzig\, the final complete cycle that survives\, described by the Bach scholar Michael Maul as ‘extremely diverse and occasionally experimental’.  Bach could call on some of the world’s best virtuoso instrumentalists: violinists\, oboists\, and especially trumpeters.  This exhilarating programme features arias with solo trumpet\, in cantatas BWV 43 and 19\, that in their very different ways must have pushed the boundaries of what was physically possible at the time.  The Thomanerchor was also at the height of its powers\, as the blistering opening of ‘Es erhub sich ein Streit’ BWV 19 demonstrates.  Join Solomon’s Knot as they continue to follow the vocal works of JS Bach and his contemporaries at 300 years’ distance. \nJS BachHöchsterwünschtes Freudenfest BWV 194Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen BWV 43Es erhub sich ein Streit BWV 19 \nSOLOMON’S KNOT \nSoprano Zoë Brookshaw\, Clare Lloyd-Griffiths\nAlto Kate Symonds-Joy\, Nathan Mercieca\nTenor Thomas Herford\, Gwilym Bowen\nBass Jonathan Sells (Artistic Director)\, Alex Ashworth \nViolin I George Clifford (leader)\, Maxim del Mar\nViolin II Gabi Jones\, Rebecca Harris\nViola Joanne Miller\, Nichola Blakey\nCello Kate Conway\nDouble Bass Jan Zahourek \nOboe Rachel Chaplin\, Sarah Humphrys\, Robert de Bree\nBassoon Inga Maria Klaucke \nTrumpet Fruzsina Hara\, Valentin Lupp\, Thomas Hewitt\nTimpani Rosemary Toll \nHarpsichord & Organ William Whitehead

SUMMARY:Bach300: Hamburg St Mark Passion 1726
DESCRIPTION:Bach performed a St Mark Passion several times\, which was composed in Hamburg before 1710 and has been attributed to various composers over the years\, including Reinhard Keiser. There is hardly any other work by a contemporary with which Bach engaged as frequently and intensively as with this Passion setting. Of the surviving versions\, which Bach edited and supplemented in different ways (Weimar 1713\, Leipzig 1726 and 1747)\, Solomon’s Knot presents the version that was performed exactly 300 years ago in St. Thomas Church during Holy Week\, offering the audience this rarely heard\, expressive music of the North German Baroque tradition – another fascinating example of Bach’s inspirations and sonic models. \nReinhard Keiser (attrib.)
