Bach300: Hamburg St Mark Passion 1726

Bach performed a St Mark Passion several times, which was composed in Hamburg before 1710 and has been attributed to various composers over the years, including Reinhard Keiser. There is hardly any other work by a contemporary with which Bach engaged as frequently and intensively as with this Passion setting. Of the surviving versions, which Bach edited and supplemented in different ways (Weimar 1713, Leipzig 1726 and 1747), Solomon’s Knot presents the version that was performed exactly 300 years ago in St. Thomas Church during Holy Week, offering the audience this rarely heard, expressive music of the North German Baroque tradition – another fascinating example of Bach’s inspirations and sonic models.
